Chuck Dunlap reports

From Feb. 2, 2007:

I have just finished a conference call with FEMA, the Red Cross, and about 39 relief agencies concerning the situation resulting from the storms last night.

The information is still very sketchy since search and rescue teams are still out reviewing the damage and others are not permitted in the area. This much appears to be verified so far:

-  about 13,000 homes remain without electricity out of the approximately 20,000 that lost electricity

-  11 fatalities have been confirmed in Lake county alone

-         the Red Cross is activated and on location and shelters are open

-  the Florida Baptist have 10 canteens in place and presently feeding people with 14 more being  activated. They are sending 16 recovery teams in to assist

-  it seems that most damage is to trailers and there is little need for items such as chain saws

-  Second Harvest has 2 semi-trailers ready to roll with food and another 4-5 being loaded now

-  Catholic Charities have several thousand "full day" meals that they can have on location in 3 hours to  assist while more permanent feeding facilities are put in place

-  Disaster Child Care is sending counselors to keep children while parents go back to their home to look for items or to go to fill out papers

-  a request was made for any church that would be willing to offer its facilities as a "comfort center," distribution center, child care center, etc

More conference calls are planned as more information becomes available. I will pass it on to you as soon as any confirmed information is available.

I thank those of you who have called to offer your services. Right now there does not appear that there is anything we can do until the assessments are made and the local rescue officials determine where help is needed.

I will keep in touch with you.

Thanks again.

Chuck Dunlap
