The History of the Diaconate
An examination of the ministry of the deacon in the early church. Attention is given to the relationship of the diaconate to other orders in the church, the reasons for the decline of the diaconate during the medieval period, and the renewal of the order.  Syllabus for History of the Diaconate

 

The Order and Ministry of the Deacon
The theological and biblical foundations of the diaconate will be explored. The course will enable the student to understand the theology of the deacon as servant and to evaluate the experience of a personal call to the ministry of deacon.                        Syllabus for Order and Ministry of a Deacon

 

Homiletics

Various approaches to the preparation, delivery, and critique of the sermon will be explored. Each student will have the opportunity to preach during the Eucharist on ICS Saturdays.  Syllabus for Homiletics

 

 

Ministry Reflection I and II

Deacon 101:  The Deacon in Liturgy
This course will acquaint the student with his/her function within the liturgy, in order to form a more comprehensive theology of the diaconate as seen in the liturgy.  Syllabus for Deacon in Liturgy

 

 

The Deacon: In the Church and In the World
This class provides the students the opportunity to reflect on their call to the diaconate and their fieldwork experiences.
