Diaconal training is a separate course of study within the Institute for Christian Studies, and offers a full curriculum for those called to the vocational diaconate. This two year curriculum seeks to empower those called to the ministry of deacon to better understand this call and to begin to experience this ministry, witnessing to the servant ministry of our Lord.
The Religion Studies and Scripture Studies years are required to be completed before beginning diaconal training.
Year One seeks to guide postulants and candidates in the development of the servant ministry of Christ, to support the student as he/she identifies personal gifts and ministry, and to provide practical training in the form of supervised fieldwork. It is intended that through both the courses and the fieldwork, the student will begin to develop competencies in servant leadership, teaching, pastoral care, and liturgical leadership.
Year Two provides workshops for the ordained deacon or priest, and for those who are about to be ordained to the vocational diaconate. These workshops are designed so that participants will gain new insight into issues pertinent for the clergy-person in active ministry. Sessions are informal, provide the opportunity for fellowship and strengthening community, and will be led by facilitators involved in ministry related to the subject matter being presented.
Courses are held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 338 East Lyman Avenue, Winter Park, FL. The day begins with Holy Eucharist at 8:30 a.m. and concludes by 3:30 p.m.
Of special note: Students in any ongoing program are strongly urged to seek regular counsel with a spiritual director. If you have a question about this, please see a faculty member or the dean.
