Camp Wingmann takes flight to summer of fun

As we look forward to another fine year at Camp Wingmann, I wanted to report on what has been going on here. 2009 was another great year for Camp Wingmann. We had 390 campers attend summer camp, which is the most we’ve had since the camp was reestablished. Our Bible theme was “Choose this day whom you will serve…but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!” (Joshua 24:15) We had a great time. Campers ate our delicious home cooked meals prepared by Mrs. Joan Yates, known around camp as “Mama Joanie”, and her kitchen staff. They went swimming and kayaking in beautiful Trout Lake, worshipped and sang fun songs in the chapel accompanied by guitar, piano, bass guitar and percussion. We played all kinds of sports and games.

Civil rights might be taken for granted by many young Americans, but memories of the struggle are still vivid for those, like the Rev. Canon Nelson Pinder, who fought on the front lines of racial injustice in the second half of the 20th century.

State Sen. Gary Siplin, Orlando Commissioner Daisy W. Lynum, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and a host of friends and relatives turned out to honor Fr. Pinder on April 9 at Parramore Heritage Park, Orlando.

Central Florida clergy crowded Canterbury Retreat, Oviedo, in February for a seminar with Canon Kenneth Bailey.

Author Kenneth Bailey spent 40 years teaching the Bible in the Middle East. He says there is much more we can learn about the Christmas story and the gospels if we make an effort to understand the Bible's cultural context.

Throughout Central Floirda, Christians celebrated Easter Sunday April 4. Easter-egg hunts, special services, sunrise vigils and festive family dinners were the order of the day.

Students Catch The Hope Tour!

Not only do we celebrate the resurrection hope in Jesus Christ each spring, but the season is also a time when youth ministry across the diocese of Central Florida is high gear. This year’s discipleship weekend events, BCAD and Emerge, share a common theme under the banner of the “Hope Tour”. BCAD, a discipleship event for high school students, happened last month. Held at beautiful Camp Wingmann, students and youth leaders explored the foundations of Christian hope and learned how to share their hope in Christ with others. In addition to the inherent fun at historic Camp Wingmann, BCAD was a transformative experience in God’s Word and the broader diocesan community.

Pinder's Kids Monument to be dedicated April 9

The Hon. Buddy Dyer, the Hon. Daisy W. Lynum, and the Hon. Gary Siplin are scheduled to dedicate the Pinder's Kids Monument at 10 a.m., Friday, April 9, at Parramore Heritage Park, Orlando.

The monument commemorates the civil-rights legacy of the Rev. Canon Nelson W. Pinder, who has served in numerous positions in the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida, most currently as interim rector at St.-John-the-Baptist, Orlando.

The Ven. Kristi Alday joins Bishop’s staff

Bishop John W. Howe announced to the Diocesan Board in October, 2009, that he had appointed Deacon Kristi Alday to the position of Archdeacon, and that she also would be Dean of the Institute for Christian Studies.

A graduate of Rollins College with a degree in economics, Archdeacon Alday worked in the private financial sector until becoming Chief Operating Officer of Walking the Mourner’s Path in 2000.

At Walking the Mourner’s Path she spent four years traveling the country training clergy and laity in grief ministry. She was ordained to the Diaconate in 2004 and is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Counseling at Asbury Seminary. Archdeacon Alday has lived in Winter Park and been married to Tom for 27 years.

These days, I am in a reflective place, as I contemplate retiring as archdeacon and dean of the Institute for Christian Studies. Perhaps this comes with the territory; I wouldn’t know; I’ve never done this before.

I had a conversation with my father, shortly before he died. He asked me, “How old am I, Lyn?” and I replied, “You’re eighty eight, Daddy.” His next comment was, “How did that happen?”

I stand at the brink of retirement! How did that happen, indeed; seventeen years as archdeacon and dean of the ICS; twenty-two years, as dean of the School of Diaconal Training. Three hundred and thirty Saturdays, not counting about forty-five, if we include my own training at ICS as a deacon! Yikes!

Canon Pinder celebrates 50 years as priest

The Rev. Canon Nelson Pinder might be well known around Florida and The Episcopal Church for his reputation as the “street priest,” the “hoodlum’s priest,” a community leader, a civilrights freedom fighter and other roles, but on Jan. 9, more than 450 of his closest friends filled the Cathedral Church of St. Luke, Orlando, to honor him as their beloved friend.

The occasion was a celebration of Canon Pinder’s 50 years as a priest in The Episcopal Church.

For 31 years the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida has honored one of the Church’s most inspiring pioneers by sponsoring the CELEBRATION OF THE FEAST OF ABSALOM JONES. This year’s Absalom Jones Day will be on Saturday, Feb. 13, 10:30 a.m. at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke, downtown Orlando.

There will be fun, fellowship, music and worship – Food for the body and soul.

The Central Florida Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE) in conjunction with the Anti-Racism Training Committee of the Diocese of Central Florida is organizing the event, and stresses that the day is for all members of the Diocese.

Canterbury Retreat & Conference Center, the Diocese of Central Florida’s premier meeting place in Oviedo, is taking its next great leap forward in management with the appointment of the Rev. Jon Davis, one of Bishop Howe’s most trusted and experienced colleagues, as executive director.

The Rev. Paul McQueen, director for nearly two decades, made vast improvements to the property and its operations, but has left to become rector of Church of the Resurrection, Longwood, beginning in December.
