I have been a member of St. Mary's in Daytona Beach for 28 years where I have served as a lector, lay eucharistic minister, 3 time vestry member, search committee member, stewardship chair and unofficial "chancellor". Recently, I helped facilitate the transfer of St. Mary's sponsored Louttit Manor senior housing to Westminster Communities to ensure its financial future. A life long Episcopalian, I grew up in St. Christopher's, Gladwyne, PA. A member of the class of 1967, I received my BA in political science from the University of the South. After service in the US Army, I attended law school at the University of Florida. As a certified local government lawyer, I have represented Daytona Beach, Volusia County and New Smyrna Beach for over 36 years. Throughout my working life I have participated in the leadership of a number of professional, civic and charitable organizations on the local, regional and national levels. My wife of 28 years, Susan, and our daughter, Sarah, are school teachers. Sarah is presently studying for her masters degree at the University of Florida. Our son, Topper, is a student at Daytona State College.
The University of the South, "Sewanee", has been a continuing relationship for me. I have been a regular contributor and inveterate booster. My family has vacationed numerous times at Sewanee. I have had lasting friendships with people within the University as well as fellow alumni.
As a Trustee, I would hope to help Sewanee continue to play to its strengths. Its commitment to educating the members and leaders of the Church in theology is an important part of its overall curriculum. Sewanee's unique environment for learning takes care to maintain. It would be a privilege to represent our Diocese on the Board.
Though I don't pretend to know of the concerns throughout the Diocese, I can say what I think I see. The doctrinal divisions in the Church are painful. But we are blessed with a hierarchical leadership that, if we support it, can bring us through this turmoil. Our Bishop has been steady and clear in guiding the Diocese and I am happy to follow.
The financial upheaval will strain the budget of every parish. A renewed emphasis on stewardship, calling on each of us to give our time, talents and treasure, may help each parish weather the storm.
Christian sponsored education is part of the Church's mission. Hopefully opportunities will occur to expand Episcopal schools throughout the Diocese.
