Literature lovers can learn all about one of the most beloved children’s book writers – Dr. Seuss – during the holidays right here in Central Florida.

St. Richard’s Episcopal Church, 5151 Lake Howell Road, in Winter Park will host the “Summoning the Divine through Literature” Festival of Light series this month and again in January 2018. Four sessions will be held over a 30-day period, with organizer Pamela Menke discussing how Seuss and other famous writers touched on faith in their work.

The Dr. Seuss & Friends Joyful Spiritual Celebration Session 1 will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Dec. 18, and from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 19. Writings to be discussed: Seuss’ “Horton Hatches an Egg & Grinch Who Stole Christmas”; 19th-century poet, preacher George MacDonald’s “Sermon Light”; and popular folk trio Pete, Paul & Mary’s “Light One Candle.”

Session 2 will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Monday, Jan. 22, and from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 23. Writings to be discussed are Seuss’ “Horton Hears a Who & Oh, the Places You’ll Go”; 19th-century poet Henry W. Longfellow’s “Bells on Christmas Day”; and 19th-century Anglican poet Christina Rossetti’s “Bleak Midwinter.”

The Session 1 reading packet is available in the church office or by emailing Menke at menkepamela@yahoo.com on the internet.
