St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church in Sebastian has an immediate opening for a part-time music minister. The position entails working approximately eight to 10 hours per week.

The music director, who operates in the ministry division, serves as choir leader and supports the choir through musical accompaniment, direction and leadership. Father Dave Newhart, rector at St. Elizabeth’s, may appoint an adviser in areas where needed for consistency purposes.

The position requires performances at Sunday 10 a.m. services and attendance at Tuesday evening choir practices. The music director will have weekly, monthly and miscellaneous duties as outlined in the church’s outgoing application:

  • Weekly – Perform music selected for the service; conduct rehearsals beginning with vocal warm-ups; introduce new music when selected three weeks before performing; assist in reviewing music and changes in planned music; suggest changes in music when needed; and direct choir during services and practices.
  • Monthly – Suggest and update music as needed; meet with pastor to discuss choir instrumental needs; assist in selection service music.
  • Miscellaneous – Accompaniment, and aid in the selection of new choral pieces, special music; assist in leading and directing the new choral pieces or special music; perform additional services such as Christmas Eve, Easter Vigil (Easter Saturday evening) and Easter Sunday. Each additional service is a paid service in addition to the above unless it falls on a regular service day.

All job applicants should be professional and possess excellent interpersonal skills, a commitment to encourage and lead music, the ability to play the organ and keyboard, proficiency in following through with details and communicating concerns and needs, knowledge of copyright and music-licensing agreements, and familiarity with contemporary and traditional Christian music and hymns; and execute timely attendance at practices and services.

The music director will work directly under Newhart and receive a performance evaluation after 90 days. An annual performance evaluation will be conducted on the anniversary date of hire.
