Camp Wingmann takes flight to summer of fun
Posted May 15th, 2010

As we look forward to another fine year at Camp Wingmann, I wanted to report on what has been going on here. 2009 was another great year for Camp Wingmann. We had 390 campers attend summer camp, which is the most we’ve had since the camp was reestablished. Our Bible theme was “Choose this day whom you will serve…but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!” (Joshua 24:15) We had a great time. Campers ate our delicious home cooked meals prepared by Mrs. Joan Yates, known around camp as “Mama Joanie”, and her kitchen staff. They went swimming and kayaking in beautiful Trout Lake, worshipped and sang fun songs in the chapel accompanied by guitar, piano, bass guitar and percussion. We played all kinds of sports and games. Clergy and Christian Education teachers from around the diocese shared the love of Christ with the kids and taught them to put their faith in Him alone. It was a wonderful summer.
When our regular camp season ended we then had a week long Friends Together camp for teenagers with HIV. After that we hosted the Diocesan Choir camp and a retreat for the Boy’s Choir from our cathedral. Ending the summer with young voices singing God’s praises was especially delightful.
During the school year we hosted many groups for weekend retreats. We had parish school groups, youth groups, parish family retreats as well as men’s and women’s weekends. We also hosted the large Diocesan Youth Retreats: BCAD, Emerge, and New Beginnings. All these events were held in this special place with the goal of bringing people, especially kids, closer to God.
We have been busy all year long improving Camp Wingmann’s facilities. Whippoorwill cabin renovation was completed. It is beautiful with pine tongue and groove paneling, air conditioning, carpeting, a spacious new bathroom and bunks for 22 people. Renovations have also started on the next cabin, which is named Sleepy Hollow. We plan to have it finished in time for our 2010 summer camp sessions. We also received a grant from Encourage, Inc. to put in air conditioning and new windows in the old mess hall, something that has been needed for a long time. It too is scheduled for completion by summer 2010.
Our financial situation is solid. The mortgage balance stands at $92,000. Due to God’s blessing, gracious donors and careful monitoring of expenses, the camp ended the year in the black. A big thank you goes out to everyone for their support and prayers. Camp Wingmann is a wonderful asset to our Diocese and our children.
Now that summer is near it is time to register for summer camp. Staff has been hired, supplies ordered and facilities are ready. All that remains is to sign up! You may pick up a summer camp brochure at your church or you may register on line at www.campwingmann.org. Don’t let your child or grandchild miss this great opportunity.
Camp Wingmann is a fun place for kids to come to know and grow in Christ!
